Flowing North from the Napier-Taupo road(SH5) to the Pacific Ocean. Despite being modified by hydro dams and access limited by private forestry land, it offers many world class fly fishing opportunities. While Lake Aniwhenua contains some opportunities for mature fish in a peaceful lake setting, often it is the tributaries and headwaters that can be the attraction. These waters are very fragile as a fishery. Catch and release is recommended as well as resting previously fished water(and it's fish) for a significant period.

Note: Early 2017 the area was devastated by major flooding, please remember this is a wild fishery and to practice catch and release to prioritise the sustainability of the fishery.
